SCTC Summer Meeting
By Erika Tarr & Patrick Ferreira The Specialty Crop Trade Council (SCTC) held its summer meeting on August 11, 2009 in Stockton, California. 40 SCTC members and associate members attended. The meeting began with an introduction of the new President /CEO of SCTC, Gary Ford. A recap of 2009-2010 carrier contracts were reviewed. SCTC is currently renegotiating rates with Hapag Lloyd as our current contract expires on August 31, 2009. The membership will be notified once the contract has been agreed upon, signed, and the new contract number is provided by the carrier. Container shipments from January 2009 through June 2009 were reviewed as well. Each month we have seen a significant increase in the volume shipped in 2008 to 2009 thus far. The volume has increased 21% to 60% in a given month. As of June 30, 2009, we have shipped approximately 45% of the volume that was shipped in 2008 and we haven’t even hit our busy months of September, October and November. SCTC membership also saw significant growth from June 2008 to June 2009, starting with 112 members and growing to 123 members. We would like to welcome our newest members and associate member of SCTC: * Sierra Valley Almonds – Kerman, California * Nutrinut, Inc. – Visalia, California * Jenco International LLC – Pleasanton, California * PCC Logistics – San Leandro, California We also had a guest speaker at the Summer Meeting. Mr. Jeff Michael, a professor at University of the Pacific and the Director of Business School Forecasting, spoke about the economy as it relates to the Central Valley, the U.S. by region, as well as globally. A question and answer period concluded Mr. Michael’s presentation. |

This is due to the low number of imports that are coming into this particular port. With the low volume of imports and a continuous flow of exports out of Oakland, it was inevitable that the carriers would soon run out of equipment. Traditionally, we have an issue with reefers (refrigerated containers); however, in 2009 we have seen a shortage of 20’ and 40’ dry containers (non-refrigerated containers). read more U.S. Free Trade agreements Please click here for more information |
