World-Class Food Safety Experts are California Bound
By Thomas Jones I was fortunate to attend the recent annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) in Grapevine, Texas.
Sessions covering Salmonella and sanitation challenges in low water activity
foods, recent food-borne disease outbreaks and third party certification of food
safety were heavily attended. Speakers included the VP of Food Safety for
Wal-Mart (Frank Yiannas), the Director of Global Sanitation at Kraft Foods (Joe
Stout) and Dr. Don Zink, Lead Scientist-Microbiology at FDA/CFSAN.
This conference is the pre-eminent meeting of world class experts in food microbiology, sanitation and food safety auditing and it is coming to California next year. The Southern California Association for Food Protection (SCAFP) will host the 97th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA on August 1-4, 2010. Admission is FREE to anyone who volunteers to help with the meeting, so pass the word! I plan to volunteer and hope that others from our industry will join me. This is a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for the people in our industry to receive world-class training and connect with the key people in food safety. A welcome bag is customarily given out to the 1800 or so attendees containing snacks from the local food industry. It would be great to see some nutritious California dried fruits and tree nuts included with these treats, so any donations would be greatly appreciated. More information about the IAFP and the annual meeting, visit http://foodprotection.org/events/iafp-annual-meeting/ To inquire about food donations or to volunteer for next year’s meeting, contact SCAFP President Margaret Burton (margaret.burton@jackinthebox.com). See you in Anaheim next year! |

SCTC Summer Meeting By Erika Tarr & Patrick Ferreira The Specialty Crop Trade Council (SCTC) held its summer meeting on August 11, 2009 in Stockton, California. 40 SCTC members and associate members attended. The meeting began with an introduction of the new President /CEO of SCTC, Gary Ford. A recap of 2009-2010 carrier contracts were reviewed. SCTC is currently renegotiating rates with Hapag Lloyd as our current contract expires on August 31, 2009. The membership will be notified once the contract has been agreed upon, signed, and the new contract number is provided by the carrier. read more Container Shortage By Erika Tarr Recently, there has been a container shortage in Oakland with a couple of our carriers. This is due to the low number of imports that are coming into this particular port. With the low volume of imports and a continuous flow of exports out of Oakland, it was inevitable that the carriers would soon run out of equipment. Traditionally, we have an issue with reefers (refrigerated containers); however, in 2009 we have seen a shortage of 20’ and 40’ dry containers (non-refrigerated containers). read more U.S. Free Trade agreements Please click here for more information |
